Description:
The picture shows how the bile duct and pancreatic duct (mostly) end in a short common duct, the ampulla hepatopancreatica (Vater), that opens at the major duodenal papilla (Vater). The openings of the bile duct, pancreatic duct and ampulla are each closed by sphincters, of which the sphincter of the ampulla (Oddi) is the most well known. The accessory pancreatic duct that ends at the minor duodenal papilla is also shown.
This image is a crop of a larger image of the whole biliary system by JMarchn on Wikimedia, with labels added by Paul Gobée.
