The duodenum has the following microscopic features:
- a mucosa that has
- villi: villus (lower zoom), villus (higher zoom) and
- intestinal glands (crypt's of Lieberkuhn), the line indicates the boundary between the villi and the glands
- a submucosa with
- Brunner's glands, these produce an alkaline secretion that neutralizes the acid from the stomach
- circular fold's (Kerckring) with a core of submucosa
- an external muscular layer that consists of two layers:
