The extraperitoneal space and fascia in a transverse section drawing

Between the transversalis fascie and the peritoneum is the extraperitoneal space. It holds a layer of tissue of varying thickness that contains fat and connective tissue. This tissue is named extraperitoneal fascia or extracoelomic fascia, or, anterior to the peritoneum, preperitoneal fascia.

The extraperitoneal space is the space between the transversalis fascia and the peritoneum. Dependent on the exact location, it is named differently.
