Duodenum
The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine. It has a C shape, that curves around the head of the pancreas.
The small intestine is the primary site where absorption of nutrients from the food occurs.
Two important events occur in the duodenum.
- First, the chyme arriving from the stomach, which is highly acid due to the stomach's hydrochloric acid, must be neutralized. Brunner's glands in the duodenal mucosa produce bicarbonate to this aim.
- Second, the bile duct and the pancreatic duct end in the duodenum at the major duodenal papilla. They deposit respectively bile and pancreatic juice in the duodenum. These are of major importance for the digestion of respectively fats and proteins.
