Atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial joints: anterior view. In situ (left) and ex situ (right). Between the occipital bone and atlas, there is only one joint on each side. In contrast, between the atlas (C1) and axis (C2), there are two types of joints – the symmetrical lateral atlanto-axial joint and unpaired median atlanto-axial joint. Latin labels.
