Layers of the abdominal wall

By Dr. David Morton, Univ. of Utah.
This video gives a very useful overview of the layers of the abdominal wall. Some layers, such as the muscle layer are described at many places. However, the layers of fascia and intermediate tissue layers and the connection between the layers are less often well discussed. They can be confusing, also because the layers may have different names at different locations in the abdomen. This video provides the general principle of the layers, which helps to creates a clear overview in the mind.

Some terms in the video may also be known under other terms:

  • hypodermis = subcutaneous tissue
  • coelomic sac = peritoneal sac
  • mesothelial lining = peritoneum
  • extracoelomic tissue = tissue outside to the peritoneum
Finally, note that this video describes two layers of the external oblique muscle, and four abdominal wall muscle layers, which is uncommon. Most textbooks don't distinguish layers of the external oblique muscle and describe only three lateral abdominal wall muscle layers.
